The business model to provide sustainable development of farmer in agriculture sector: contract farming

This paper highlights a few successful cases of contract farming in India and discusses the history, objectives, and types of contract farming as well as its benefits to farmers, firms and the public sector. Also discussed are several concerns about the desirability of contract farming from a poverty and equity standpoint, foremost of which involves the opportunistic nature of such arrangements. Also presented are the steps taken by the Gujarat government to encourage contract farming, and the findings of a study that explored farmers' and contract agents' perspectives on contract farming.
