Objective / Goal The objective of the project was to mitigate the effects of the current drought situation on the most vulnerable groups through contributing to food requirements and savings of the key livestock based livelihood assets.

Activities

Activities were the following: 

  • Emergency de-stocking: due to the prolonged drought, animals had lost condition, and became weak and eventually died. Emergency de-stocking and slaughter provided direct source of food for crises affected families in the form of fresh or dry meat relieving pressure on grazing and water for the remaining livestock while assisting livestock owners convert some of their stock assets into cash.
  • Supplementary feeding of key breeding stock: support of key breeding stock with feed supplementation in order to increase their chances of survival and allow communities to begin breeding their animals once the drought has subsided was essential.
  • Animal healt: veterinary support through mass treatments and vaccinations were provided.
  • Rift Valley Fever: risk assessment and surveillance were implemented.
  • Avoid contamination: removal of carcasses from water sources in targeted areas was facilitated to communities.
  • Restocking in case the short rains do well.
  • Short rains: seeds for planting during the short rains were distributed.
  • Monitoring and evaluation.
