Start date 18/07/2010
End date 07/02/2012
Status Completed
Recipient / Target Areas Djibouti
Budget 400 134 USD
Project Code OSRO/DJI/001/CHA
Objective / Goal

The overall objective is to contribute towards safeguarding the livelihoods of the pastoral communities through rehabilitation of ground water catchment facilities (in order to improve small scale farmers' vegetable and forage production) and provision of basic veterinary services for the remaining ailing livestock.

Specific objectives included:

  • re-establishing pastoralist resilience by increasing access to drinking water (for both humans and animals) and grazing;
  • rapidly improving small scale farmers’ production and productivity through provision of agricultural inputs; and
  • rebuilding livestock assets of drought affected communities.
Beneficiaries 60 000
Activities The implementation included the following activities:
  • support to the establishment of water harvesting structures (shallow wells, underground cisterns and water dams) to increase access to water in the remaining overstretched/over utilised areas;
  • rapid rehabilitation and/or construction of small agro pastoral perimeters, reinforcing of home gardening and tree nursery production. These activities will be closely linked to the establishment of water harvesting technologies, such as wells for small-scale irrigation, buried cisterns and water retention networks;
  • provision of appropriate forage seeds, vegetable seeds, drought tolerant crops, tools for digging wells and for small agro pastoral perimeters; and
  • distribution of small ruminants (2 500 goats or others) in order to facilitate the post-drought reconstitution of pastoral assets through market fairs or direct distribution. Should a market fair be feasible, each household will receive a voucher equivalent to the value of 5 animals.
