Objective / Goal The objective of the project was to improve the livelihood and food security of 61 200 households through the distribution of 300 tonnes of emergency seed, vaccination of 1.5 million sheep and goats against peste des petits
ruminants (PPR) and sheep and goat pox SGP, 150 000 cattle against contagious bovine pleuro pneumonia (CBPP), as well as emergency treatment of livestock against major diseases, and, finally, rehabilitation of seven water points.

Activities

The following activities were included:

  • identification of 10 000 most vulnerable households (equivalent to at least 50 000 persons) in consultation with kebele administrations and partners (exchange of data with NGOs partners and government offices);
  • procurement and delivery of 300 metric tonnes of meher emergency seeds and kits of agricultural tools for 10 000 households in drought affected woredas in the Afar, Amhara, Gambella and Tigray regions. Seeds were distributed through direct seed distribution of locally available and environmentally adaptable seeds;
  • agreement with all stakeholders on the modalities of peste des petits ruminants (PPR), sheep and goat pox (SGP),  contagious bovine pleuro pneumonia (CBPP) vaccination programmes and emergency treatments;
  • obtainment of 1.5 million SGP, 1.5 million PPR and 150 000 CBPP subsidized vaccines through government channels;
  • procurement emergency veterinary drugs and distribute them through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded NGOs, to strengthen private veterinary services and community animal health workers (CAHWs);
  • preparation of comprehensive SGP, PPR and CBPP disease control training materials for the community, animal health personnel, development agents and other stakeholders;
  • conduction of SGP, PPR and CBPP vaccination activities for 1.5 million sheep and goats and 150 000 cattle belonging to 250 000 people (50 000 households) in the Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Oromiya and Tigray regions;
  • rehabilitation of seven water points (ponds and elas) in water scarce areas that will benefit 1 200 households owning 24 000 livestock in Borena, in parallel with community water points and the ponds management programme; and
  • monitoring, evaluation and reporting of project activities.
