Objective / Goal The objective of the project is to immediately increase access to food, water, and basic necessities and protect the livelihoods of severely drought-affected communities in south and central Somalia.

Activities

The project builds on historical and ongoing UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) investments under the project entitled “Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit for Somalia (FSNAU)”. In particular, all the key activities under Result 1 of this project are a continuation of activities under the above-referenced FCDO award. The conditional and unconditional cash activities, as well as the enhancement of water catchment infrastructure are new activities in response to the severe and deteriorating drought situation.

  • Result 1: timely food security and nutrition information and analysis is developed for early warning and early action, emergency response, and related capacity development support provided to Somali institutions (FSNAU):
    • weekly monitoring of 71 markets (46 urban and 25 rural) across Somalia and making the online data accessible to users;
    • regularly monitor rainfall,  river levels, and vegetation in collaboration with the Somalia Water and Land Information Management Project (SWALIM) and the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS-NET);
    • conduction of the 2022 Post Gu seasonal food security and nutrition assessments among rural, urban, and displaced populations;
    • conduction of three integrated food security, nutrition, and mortality surveys as part of the 2022 Post Gu seasonal food security and nutrition assessments;
    • regularly monitoring of food security and nutrition-related risk factors in collaboration with partners, update the Early Warning and Early Action database and dashboard, and make the information accessible to users (both online and offline);
    • production and dissemination of monthly updates on markets and climate, quarterly nutrition updates, as well as periodic food security and nutrition updates and food security outlook reports;
    • dissemination of FSNAU information products and analyses through the FSNAU website, and mailing lists;
    • provision of regular as well as ad hoc briefings on the current as well as emerging food security and nutrition situation in Somalia to the Somalia Food Security Cluster and partners, the Somalia Nutrition Cluster and partners, the Somalia Humanitarian Country Team, and other stakeholders;
    • provision of opportunities for technical staff of the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS)  and other Federal Government of Somalia institutions to participate in the 2022 Post Gu food security and nutrition assessment and subsequent analyses; and
    • support to the SNBS to conduct Consumer Price Index (CPI study).
  • Result 2: increasing immediate access to food in rural areas for drought-affected populations:
    • conditional cash transfers (Cash-for-Work) and unconditional cash transfers (UCTs);
    • "Cash Plus Ag" cash transfers; and
    • support for livestock destocking.
  • Result 3: critical water catchment infrastructure is rehabilitated for improved water access:
    • existing infrastructure upgraded to provide water for livestock; and
    • critical infrastructure rehabilitated to provide water for livestock.
