Objective / Goal

The main objective of the project was to contribute to restore livelihood of pastoral populations, through emergency activities focused on rehabilitation of ground water catchment facilities, improvement of rural small scale irrigation for fodder and vegetable production, emergency livestock vaccination campaigns, livestock restocking and promotion of alternative income generation activities.

Activities The following activities were implemented:
  • construction of 6 underground cisterns of 100 m3 storage facilities each for the water supply of pastoralist household;
  • rehabilitation and improvement of water harvesting structure dedicated to a rational water management in 100 small agropastoral perimeters (vegetable garden, fodder and fruit production) where the average surface is about  5 000 m² and localized in the wadi alluvial in agricultural areas of Obock, Tadjourah, Arta, Ali-Sabieh and Dikhil;
  • provision of appropriate forage and shrub seeds tolerant to drought and salinity impact and small agricultural tools for 300 small scale farmers and agropastorals households;
  • training of the agropastoral population on the integrated pest management strategies against plant pest disease (gardening and fruit);
  • provision of veterinary product and nutritional additive, mineral supplement (calcium and phosphor) for the weakness affected animals. An operational support team will insure the veterinary campaign for the animal basic care; and
  • distribution of 2 000 small ruminants in order to facilitate the post-drought reconstitution of pastoral assets through market fairs or direct distribution. Should a market fair be feasible, each household will receive a voucher equivalent to the value of 15 animals.
