Objective / Goal The overall objective of the project was to support vulnerable farmers affected by high food prices and drought through the provision of quality wheat seed and fertilizer for the autumn 2010 planting season in Nangarhar, Kunar , Ghor, Badakhshan and Daykundi provinces.

Activities

The project procured, quality controlled and distributed 720 tonnes of certified wheat seed, 720 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and 1 440 tonnes of Urea to 14 386 farming families for the autumn 2010 planting season. Only two bags of wheat were lost during the delivery and 12 packages were not distributed due to logistical issues. These bags were distributed to the farmers for the following planting season (autumn 2011). Each beneficiary received a kit comprised of 50 kg of wheat seed of irrigated varieties, 50 kg of DAP and 100 kg of urea fertilizer, to enable the cultivation of about 0.4 hectares of irrigated land. 

The following activities were carried out during the reporting period:

  • technical specifications for all inputs;
  • selection of a recipient organization as an implementing partner;
  • selection of project districts, village/communities and beneficiaries;
  • training of the staff members of Provincial Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock and the recipient organization for the further training of beneficiaries;
  • procurement and quality control of 720 tonnes of certified wheat seed, 720 tonnes of DAP and 1 440 tonnes of urea;
  • tendering, contracting of Afghan-based private transport companies, and transportation of procured inputs (seed, DAP and urea fertilizers);
  • delivery of inputs to the project distribution sites;
  • distribution of inputs from designated distribution points in each district to the selected beneficiaries;
  • monitoring during distribution of the inputs; and
  • conducting of socio-economic surveys among beneficiaries.
