Activities

The overall objective of the project was to reduce additional livelihood losses among drought- and flood-affected communities through the resumption of agricultural production and the establishment and/or improvement of veterinary services, animal feed and water supplies.

Specific objectives in Afar Region included:

  • reduction of animal morbidity and mortality;
  • emergency production of multi-nutrient blocks (MNBs);
  • improvement of poor quality roughages;
  • quick-impact fodder banks introduced;
  • accessible pocket areas with drought-tolerant fodder shrubs and trees;
  • two water ponds created to extend/open up the use of wet season grazing areas to the dry season;
  • 150 Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) and 45 DAs trained in quick and effective animal health delivery service;
  • multi-power source deep freezers and ice makers operating;
  • increased use of locally available feed resources, namely, molasses and cereal crop residues;
  • increased local capacity to increase the availability of feed at times of periodic feed crisis;
  • planting by farmers of 9 000 ha of land, 3 600 tonnes of produce harvested by the end of the year,  plant sweet potato
  • seeds, cuttings and  farm tools distributed;
  • 45 CAHWs trained and equipped to operate at least three pharmacies established by the project in selected woredas.
