Objective / Goal The object of the project was to increase access to water for 9 580 vulnerable, food insecure pastoralist and agropastoralist beneficiaries affected by the prolonged drought in rural areas of Djibouti, and to increase food security through cash for work and support to small irrigation of vegetable and fodder plots for 1 800 beneficiaries.

Activities

The following activities were included:

  • construction of 7 cisterns/water catchment infrastructure in communities that do not have access to ground water in isolated areas in the North West Pastoral zones of Tadjourah and Dikhil for 1 260 beneficiaries;
  • rehabilitation of 10 key wells in food insecure regions of Obock for 2 500 beneficiaries;
  • provision of cash for work to 300 vulnerable food insecure families for 1 800 beneficiaries;
  • construct an 8 km pipe-aqueduct in Assagueyla to link isolated communities to a water source;
  • rapid access to drinking water points for 900 beneficiaries;
  • provision of 20 solar pumps  and 100 drip irrigation kits to drought affected small gardens for increased vegetable and fodder production for 2 520 beneficiaries; and
  • distribution of 400 camels to vulnerable communities for improved water access (through assistance to water transportation)  for 2 400 beneficiaries.
