Objective / Goal The project’s objective is to improve the food security of some 4 000 vulnerable rural households in selected areas of Afghanistan affected by disasters (drought, floods, etc.) through the provision of improved wheat seed and fertilizers for the 2007 autumn planting season.

Activities

The main activity of the project was to procure and distribute 200 tonnes of quality-declared wheat seed, together with 200 tonnes of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and 200 tonnes of urea fertilizer, to 4 000 farming families in the selected areas for the autumn 2007 planting season. Each beneficiary received a kit comprising 50 kg of wheat seed (irrigated varieties), 50 kg of DAP and 50 kg of urea fertilizer, to enable the cultivation of about 0.4 hectares of irrigate land. 

Project activities included:

  • selection of implementing partners;
  • selection of project districts and beneficiaries;
  • procurement of 200 tonnes of quality-declared seed, 200 tonnes of DAP and 200 tonnes of urea fertilizer;
  • quality control of inputs;
  • delivery of inputs to beneficiaries; and
  • reimbursement and subsequent funding of community micro-projects.
