Sustainable Forest Management Impact Program on Dryland Sustainable Landscapes

Virtual workshop gender and drylands

14/05/2024
The GEF-7 Drylands Sustainable Landscapes Impact Program (DSL-IP) prioritizes gender-responsiveness and women's empowerment as an essential part of its programmatic support to the 11 country projects across Africa and Asia. The program focuses on boosting the resilience of dryland production systems, endorsing restoration and rehabilitation, and enhancing livelihoods. Following the relevant GEF policy and guidance, the DSL-IP Global Coordination Project (GCP) will provide tailored support to strengthen gender mainstreaming efforts in all 11 child projects.

From June to September 2023, IUCN worked closely with countries and conducted a comprehensive assessment on capacity gaps within country project teams. To share these results and strengthen gender considerations presence within the work carried out by countries, IUCN organized a virtual training workshop on gender mainstreaming in the Dryland Sustainable Landscapes Impact program (DSL IP) on December 18, 2023. The workshop gathered more than 50 participants from the country projects including the gender focal points, the national project coordinators, and the Monitoring and Evaluation specialists.

Building on this progress, the DSL-IP Community of Practice 3 (CoP) unites key partners to create and implement joint strategies. Partners like the International Union for Conservation of Nature, FAO's WeCaN initiative and CDE-WOCAT are working together and aim to advance gender-responsive actions and women's empowerment within the DSL-IP Country Projects (CPs), particularly focusing on the identified core themes of each country. In southern Africa, for instance, gender-sensitive elements have been integrated into assessments carried out to identify producer organizations with which the Program will work.

Now, the Community of Practice and its partners are working on an in-person global DSL-IP training workshop on Gender to take place on 4-6 September 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya. More information on this will come soon!
