06/08/2021

This week marked the start of the 33rd edition of the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center’s (Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza, CATIE) international course on forest management, entitled “Diversified Forest Management: Governance and Legality in the American Tropics”. The course is supported by the FAO-EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Programme and will run until 30 September 2021, with participants meeting virtually three times a week.

The course covers a range of topics in the forest management field, including the benefits of legal logging, national requirements for timber extraction and international timber trading regulations. Throughout the course, participants will:

  • gain substantial technical knowledge on the management of tropical forests, taking into account the wide range of goods and services they offer;
  • learn about landscape restoration and different models of territorial management;
  • better understand socioeconomic factors related to forest management;
  • analyze challenges and considerations in the formulation of public policies, the implementation of legality verification systems and the development of Independent Forest Monitoring (IFM) activities.

FAO-EU FLEGT Programme officers will be contributing with their field experience and technical knowledge to the course’s final module: Governance, Legality Verification Systems and Competitiveness. From 13-30 September 2021, officers will deliver lessons on market development through forest governance, land formalization, voluntary partnership agreements (VPAs), due diligence, timber traceability systems, legality verification systems, amongst other key topics.
