FAO and Turkey endorse new projects to be developed under the partnership programmes

28 November 2018; Ankara- During the Steering Committee held on 28 November 2018 in Ankara, FAO and Turkey endorsed a set of new projects to be developed under the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture (FTPP II) and the FAO-Turkey Forestry Partnership Programme (FTFP).

The meetings were co-chaired by Viorel Gutu, Subregional Coordinator for Central Asia and FAO Representative in Turkey, and Aylin Çağlayan Özcan, Director General of EU and Foreign Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey, and attended by representatives from the relevant General Directorates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), and the Strategy and Budget Office of the Presidency, as well as senior and technical officers from FAO.

Eight new concepts were endorsed for development into fully fledged projects for the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture (FTPP). These cover not only the countries of Central Asia, Azerbaijan and Turkey, but also other countries in Africa and the Balkans. The new projects will focus on:

  • the development of fisheries and aquaculture in Central Asia, 
  • strengthening regional collaboration and national capacities for management of wheat rust diseases,
  • reduction of food loss and waste, 
  • improving national food safety systems and regional cooperation,
  • improving the efficiency of small ruminant production,
  • empowerment of rural women
  • regional collaboration among ECO countries in the area of food security, and
  • regional collaboration among BSEC countries in the area of sustainable food systems.

Under the FAO-Turkey Forestry Partnership Programme (FTFP), a project will be developed to enhance national capacities of several countries from the Central Asia and Caucasus region and to strengthen regional networks with a view to successfully conduct large-scale forest and other wooded lands restoration measures.
