Initiative for pesticides and pest management in Central Asia and Turkey

Project overview:

The project aimed primarily at evaluating the scope of the obsolete pesticides problem in Central Asian countries. This was to be achieved by supporting the countries in the implementation of a detailed inventory and risk assessment. In addition, the project aimed to identify needs within countries for further legal, institutional and technical capacity building in pest and pesticide management, with the intention to identify and move towards the elimination of obsolete pesticide stocks.

Key results of the project:

  • Technical capacities in obsolete pesticide management increased within the competent ministries as a result of training in inventory management and the Pesticide Stock Management System (PSMS).
  • Inventories of obsolete pesticides were finalized in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and the southern part of Kazakhstan.
  • Inventory data were analysed and uploaded to the PSMS system, along with data relating to safeguarding and disposal, pesticide registration management, import control and stock management.
