Support to the diversification and sustainable crop production intensification for smallholder farmers in the drylands of Borno State

Project overview:

Agriculture represents the largest sector of the economy of Nigeria, and offers potential for contributing to overall economic growth and raising rural incomes. However, the sector is characterized by the dominance of monocropping, which has been the source of major phytosanitary and environmental problems. Funded by the Government of the Republic of Turkiye, the overall objective of this project is to assist the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in improving farmers’ competitiveness through the promotion of sustainable crop management techniques characterized by higher productivity and cropping system diversification, while ensuring the environmental services that healthy agro-ecosystems provide and developing collaborations between Nigeria and Türkiye in agriculture.

This collaboration will be ensured through the Turkish research institutions working in dryland conditions, which will provide technical support to the Nigerian counterparts in diversification of their production systems and in improvement of the production practices under dryland conditions. Furthermore, project will enable reciprocal exchange of knowledge and expertise as well as varieties that are suitable for dryland conditions in both countries.

The impact of the project will be diversified cropping system and improved rural livelihoods and sustainable soil and crop management practices applied by farmers.
