Over the last two decades, forest and landscape restoration (FLR) has developed as an approach to increase the ecological integrity and functioning of degraded forests and landscapes while simultaneously improving human wellbeing and livelihoods.

In the current context of global efforts to promote the restoration agenda, Unasylva 252 “Restoring the Earth: the next decade” outlines a series of new restoration initiatives and programmes aimed at increasing funding, empowering local stakeholders and enhancing technical assistance for FLR.

The publication presents technical approaches, such as Assisted Natural Regeneration, to increase the adoption of FLR, and underlines the factors that underpin its implementation. Among the positive stories highlighted is China’s success in reversing centuries of forest degradation and loss thanks to political leadership, multi-stakeholder involvement and an adaptive management approach.

The publication also outlines actions needed to realize the momentum offered by the upcoming UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) to upscale forest restoration across hundreds of millions of hectares. These include developing comprehensive business cases for governments and private-sector investors, new policies and legislation to support investments in restoration, and protocols for restoration tailored for specific landscapes. As China has already shown its great capacity for restoration, these approaches could be interesting to sustainably upscale the model even further.

This webinar will be the occasion to present the Chinese translation of Unasylva 252 and highlight key topics of the publication relevant to China while emphasizing the vibrancy of restoration efforts at global level and offering a better understanding of challenges and opportunities showcased in the report.

Please note that simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English and Chinese.
