The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism

The Alliance for Restoration of Forest Ecosystems in Africa Programme Steering Committee Meeting

Location: Kajiado County, Kenya

The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will attend the Alliance for Restoration of Forest Ecosystems in Africa (AREECA) Programme Steering Committee Meeting on 8–11 May 2023 in Kajiado County, Kenya, hosted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

This meeting is designed to provide reports on regional, national and transnational processes by implementing agencies, a joint discussion facilitated by the project management unit (the German Agency for International Cooperation GmbH [GIZ]), and a midterm review of project obstacles and opportunities. Moreover, field visits are arranged with the following associated topics:

  • Oltukai Lodge restoration site in the Amboseli National Park – briefing and tree planting;
  • Loitokitok Forest – invasive control and border sites, tree nursery and enrichment planting blocks;
  • Entarara Forest – meet newly formed Community Forest Association officials, tree planting;
  • Shurie springs – ongoing restoration with the county government;
  • Amboseli Landowners Conservancies Association (ALOCA) rangeland restoration sites – presentation of ALOCA approach, wildlife corridors and springs; and
  • Greening Loitokitok – water and soil conservation sites in farmlands and urban area conservation.

The AREECA programme is financed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) fund. It is composed of the African Union Development Agency of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD), FAO, GIZ, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Bank, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF.
