To support efforts to restore degraded ecosystems worldwide, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 2021–2030 as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (hereafter UN Decade), led jointly by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The UN Decade addresses the current lack of technical knowledge and capacity in both public and private sectors to design, implement, monitor and sustain effective restoration initiatives. A FAO-led Task Force on Best Practices was established to enhance knowledge dissemination and capacity development. The Task Force on Best Practices has developed:

  • ten principles for the whole set of ecosystem restoration activities listed under the scope of the UN Decade;
  • standards of practice to provide guidance on the application of the ten principles; and
  • a platform for the dissemination of good restoration practices, integrated into the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM), a geospatial platform and a registry of restoration initiatives designed to track global progress and disseminate good restoration practices.

The FAO-led Task Force on Best Practices has organized this webinar as part of their efforts to improve knowledge sharing and capacity development throughout the UN Decade. This webinar will encourage North American-based restoration experts to share knowledge with the global restoration community by providing detailed guidance on how to register restoration initiatives and document good practices using the FERM platform. The webinar will also showcase FERM's search engine tool, which allows users to consult and access documented good practices from different platforms. In addition, the webinar will present the summary report of the Standards of practice to guide ecosystem restoration, an overview of the 250+ recommended practices through five main components and 45 sub-components of the restoration process. The agenda for the event proceeds as follows, with James Obata (FAO) as the moderator:
