To prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems worldwide, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 2021–2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

To boost actions for the implementation of the UN Decade, a FAO-led Task Force on Best Practices was established to enhance knowledge dissemination and capacity development efforts. With more than 100 members, the Task Force gathers expertise in all ecosystems and connects all players with a stake in restoration.

This session will be the occasion to introduce and discuss the three key products developed by the Task Force:

  • A set of key principles defining ecosystem restoration, valid across all ecosystems and biomes;
  • The results of an assessment, undertaken at global level, that provides an overview of current strengths, gaps, needs and barriers to achieve global restoration goals; and
  • The template that will serve as the basis to collect and widely share good practices for restoration among peers worldwide throughout the Decade.

Agenda:

  • Enhancing capacities to achieve the ambition of the Decade - Mette Wilkie, FAO co-leader UN Decade
  • What are the key principles for ecosystem restoration? - Vera Boerger, FAO
  • What are the capacity needs? Key findings of the global UN Decade Capacity Needs Assessment survey - Robin Chazdon, Forestoration International
