09/10/2023

In an era marked by digital transformation and innovation, it's crucial to ensure that every sector of society, including agriculture, benefits from these advancements. The Global Network of Digital Agriculture Innovation Hubs, in collaboration with experts, recently hosted a successful webinar titled "Empowering Women Through Innovation and Digitalization to Transform the Agrifood System." The event aimed to shed light on the transformative power of digitalization in the agricultural sector, particularly for women.

The webinar gathered an impressive lineup of speakers, each offering a distinct perspective to the discussion. Tacko Ndiaye, Senior Officer at FAO and gender focal point, skillfully moderated the event. With over 200 registered participants, and an impressive 115 attendees who stayed engaged from start to finish, it is evident that the topic holds tremendous global significance. Participants from across the world actively participated in discussions and asked questions to the speakers, which subsequently sparked conversations on various other platforms.

The webinar opened with a message from Farayi Zimoudzi, the FAO Representative in Ethiopia, who highlighted the significance of initiatives like the Digital Agriculture Innovation Hubs in the country. These initiatives are making a substantial impact by offering capacity-building, knowledge sharing, and empowerment opportunities, particularly for women and youth in agriculture.

Nancy Rapando, representing Africa Food Future for WWF Kenya, set the stage by underlining the paramount significance of empowering women and rectifying gender imbalances in leadership roles within the agribusiness sector. She brings a wealth of experience, having collaborated with diverse stakeholders across East, Central, and Southern Africa on matters concerning food systems, agriculture value chains, natural resource management, climate change, and food and nutrition.

Ebun Feludu, fondly referred to as the "Chief Coconut Cracker," shared her journey as the Founder and CEO of Kokari Coconuts in Nigeria. Her entrepreneurial odyssey began when she identified the absence of lactose-free coffee options for individuals like herself, who are lactose intolerant. At Kokari Coconuts, they not only provide training but also employment opportunities in their factories located in Okun Ajah and Badagry. In these communities, where men often seek employment opportunities elsewhere, Kokari Coconuts empowers local women by offering training and jobs. Their commitment is reflected in maintaining a workforce comprised of eighty percent women.

Furthermore, Kokari Coconuts has embarked on engaging smallholder farmers, primarily in Badagry. By establishing direct contracts with these farmers, they eliminate intermediaries, allowing farmers to sell their produce without prolonged waiting periods, which can lead to coconut spoilage. This approach not only benefits the farmers but also enhances the overall efficiency of the coconut supply chain.

Bevon Chadel Charles, an enterprising farmer and the visionary behind Akta Farms in Grenada, injected a delightful sense of humor into her presentation, sharing on her journey from being the second-generation farmer to the delightful twist of having her father now working for her. Growing in Grenada, where agriculture and small-scale enterprises form the bedrock of livelihoods, Bevon's deep-rooted passion for agriculture flourished. Her commitment to instigate transformative change drove her to create many sustainable development initiatives. Along this journey, she has cultivated a diverse skill set, spanning domains such as international business and trade, marketing, AI technology, and sustainable land management.

Sofija Bogeva, closing the roster of speakers, encapsulated Rockstar's mission from their Copenhagen office, stating, "Our world is undergoing a profound shift toward sustainability and regeneration. Yet, to truly make a global impact, collaboration is key. We empower others to challenge the existing system." Rockstar is dedicated to investing in pioneering founders with revolutionary concepts for a sustainable future. Their approach resonates deeply with the overarching objectives of digital agriculture and innovation.

Loly Gaitan from ITU (International Telecommunication Union) delivered the closing remarks, reinforcing the impact that technology can have on women in agriculture. Her words emphasized the importance of leveraging digital solutions to overcome challenges and drive positive change.

The "Empowering Women Through Innovation and Digitalization to Transform the Agrifood System" webinar underscored the pivotal role of digitalization in bridging gender disparities and empowering women in agriculture.
