In the scenic and fertile lands of Grenada, a new chapter of agricultural innovation is unfolding. With the launch of the Blue-Green Digital Innovation Challenge, the Government of Grenada, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is spearheading a visionary initiative. This groundbreaking challenge aims to empower local entrepreneurs and Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises in the agroprocessing and agrotourism sectors by encouraging the integration of innovative and digital solutions into their operations. With not only a substantial prize fund of up to USD 30 000, but also building capacities, the Blue-Green Challenge seeks to foster economic growth, enhance productivity, and address climate change challenges in Grenada's agricultural sector.
Fueling Resilience through Innovation
The Blue-Green Digital Innovation Challenge is an integral part of the GEF-funded Climate Resilience Agriculture project, which aims to strengthen the resilience of agricultural systems. It is also a key outcome of FAO's FVC (Flexible Voluntary Contribution) Global Network Digital Agriculture Innovation Hub in Grenada.
The UNDP Accelerator Lab in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean has recognised the important role of grassroots innovators and is actively supporting the challenge. This grassroots approach aims to promote innovation at the community level by providing financial support and technical expertise to local innovators who may not have the resources to implement their ideas.
Beyond Traditional Boundaries
While the challenge primarily targets entrepreneurs and MSMEs in the agroprocessing and agrotourism sectors, it also extends an invitation to individuals and entities within the Information Technology (IT) and digital space. This inclusive approach aims to foster collaboration and cross-cutting ideas between traditional agricultural practices and cutting-edge digital solutions. By leveraging the power of technology, Grenada's agricultural sector can benefit from increased efficiency, improved productivity, and enhanced sustainability.

During the launch event, Mr. Aaron Francois, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, recognizing the opportunity for collaboration between the IT field and agricultural entrepreneurs. Senator The Hon. Adrian Thomas, Minister of State for the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Fisheries & Cooperatives, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significant benefits the challenge would bring to stakeholders and beneficiaries.
