06/03/2017

The Incentives for Ecosystem Services (IES) approach was presented during the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature (LPFN) Initiative African Landscapes Dialogue: Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) in Practice, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 6-9 March 2017. The Dialogue aimed to:

- Share lessons and experiences in ILM across initiatives and countries in Africa

- Highligh promising initiatives, innovations and lessons learned

- Gain knowledge and skills in ILM through trianing and tools

- Review progress made on implementaiton of the African Landscapes Action Plan (ALAP) 2014-2016 and identify next steps for action

- Enhance coordination and collaboration among landscape initiatives and prorgammes

The IES team also co-coordinated discussions on Financing Sustainable Landscapes to share experiences and lessons learned on Lates innovations in landscape finance and Establishing a Community of Practice for landscape finance in Africa. Key messages inlcuded: 1) The need to mobilize finance from multiple sources to support multiple stakeholders and the diversity of ILM needs; 2) For coordinating entities to be a central elmeent to enable 'blended finance' (public, private, civil society) to support farmers implement best practices for sustainable productivity and improved provision of ecosystem services; and, 3) Infiltration of the private sector to embed landscape thinking in financial strategies, and of governments to embed the need for divers financing in their landscape strategies. This is reflective of the IES approach, in particular, the development of enabling frameworks to create and support a package of incentives co-financed from public, private, civil society initiatives for ILM approaches.
