Incentives for Ecosystem Services

Tools and models for decision support

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) is one of the principle documents that underpins the ecosystem services approach. It offers a basis for ecosystem assessment. The MA focuses on the ways in which humans have altered ecosystems, how changes in ecosystem services have affected human well-being and may affect people in future decades.  It also looks at the types of responses that can be adopted at a local, national or global scale to improve ecosystem management and, therefore, contribute to human well-being and poverty alleviation.

The Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity (TEEB) series focuses on the economic benefits of biodiversity, including the growing cost of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation.

The  ValuES Methods Database can be used for both valuation techniques and models to support decision-making.

Invest is a suite of software models used to map and value ecosystem goods and services.

BSR developed a business decision-making aid that provides a comparative assessment of emerging tools for identifying, assessing, and valuing ecosystem services. It offers an ecosystem services approach to consider corporate actions and their impacts on environmental, economic and sociocultural contexts.

The ESP provides practical methods and approaches to guide decision-makers in assessing, valuing and integrating ecosystem services and sociocultural contexts

The CGIAR Research program on Water, Land and Ecosystems is an integrated approach to develop scalable solutions to reduce poverty, improve food security and maintain healthy ecosystems. For example, through research to support negotiation of Trust Funds for watershed management, such as this one for Nairobi, in Kenya.

The Global Mechanism developed a series of tools to integrate economic valuation of land as a vehicle to unlock the investment potential for SLM:

ELD: Economics of Land Degradation

IFPRI, Economics of Land Degradation: costs of action versus inaction

Measuring the value of land

Economic evidence to spur politicians into action

ARIES is a web-based tool to map different types of ecosystem services, their benefits, beneficiaries and service flows. It aims to visualize, value and manage the ecosystems on which the human economy and well-being depend.

The Ecosystem Services Review for Impact Assessment guides practitioners to integrate ecosystem services into environmental and social assessments.
