01/08/2024

A training workshop on the definition and evaluation of fisheries co-management effectiveness will take place on 20-22 August 2024, in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. This initiative is part of the FAO project “Fisheries Co-management Capacity Development for Blue Communities,” also known as Smart Fisheries Co-management (SFC) project, funded by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea. The project aims to enhance the capacity of government authorities and Cambodia community fisheries (CFis) in developing sustainable fisheries co-management systems.

Approximately 25 participants, including technicians from the Fisheries Administration and members of Community Fisheries from Kampi and Ou Mreah, will attend the workshop. The training will cover various topics, including the definition and principles of fisheries co-management, the legal framework for community fisheries in Cambodia, and the development of Community Fishing Area Management Plans.

The workshop will also emphasize the importance of monitoring and evaluation in fisheries management, teaching participants how to assess the effectiveness of co-management practices. Sessions will be conducted in both English and Khmer, with simultaneous interpretation to facilitate understanding.

Overall, the workshop aims to empower local communities and promote sustainable aquatic resource management, aligning with the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries.
