A glance at the ten-year upgrading strategy for sustainable value chains in Cabo Verde

08/08/2024

The newly released document summarizes the transformative ten-year upgrading strategy launched by the SVC4SIDS project in Cabo Verde, aimed at enhancing sustainable value chains for mackerel scad and tuna-like species. This strategic document outlines a comprehensive framework for improving the economic performance of the fisheries sector while ensuring environmental sustainability and social equity.

The strategy marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to bolster its fisheries sector. Following a series of regular meetings and a strategy development workshop held on 9 June 2023, the official adoption of the ten-year plan sets a clear path for implementation from 2023 to 2033.

Key objectives of the strategy include enhancing production quality, improving nutritional outcomes, and fostering better environmental practices. The plan emphasizes the importance of formalizing operators within the sector by bringing informal fishing activities and operators into a regulated and recognized framework, creating and supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and modernizing the fishing fleet and supporting infrastructure. Additionally, it aims to promote value addition and public-private partnerships (PPP) to ensure the long-term sustainability of the fisheries.

The strategy also addresses critical issues such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, food safety, and quality control, with a focus on building the capacities necessary for environmental, socio-economic, and financial sustainability. With 36 activities outlined, the strategy is poised to create a robust framework for the future of Cabo Verde's fisheries.

The successful implementation of this strategy will be crucial in achieving better production, better nutrition, better environmental practices, and a better quality of life for all Cape Verdeans.
