Trainings and scoring workshops: Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Implementation Monitoring Tool (EAF IMT)

18/06/2024

The EAF Nansen Programme and the SVC4SIDS project continued their collaboration by organising a series of training sessions and workshops on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Implementation Monitoring Tool (EAF IMT) in Cabo Verde. From 14 to 16 May, the first online sessions introduced the tool’s principal components: ecological well-being, human well-being, and ability to achieve. The EAF IMT tool facilitates strategic planning, identifies progress and gaps, and guides activities for fisheries management.

The tool employs a scoring methodology across three category levels: assessment, management and outcome. In-person scoring workshops were conducted on 30 May and 6 June in Praia and Mindelo, respectively. Experts and stakeholders from 4 islands, namely Maio, Santiago, Sal and São Vicente, participated in setting a baseline using the scoring methodology. The final outcome will help update the national fisheries management plan through the participatory process, particularly for mackerel scad and tuna-like species.

Collaboration between SVC4SIDS project and EAF Nansen Programme

Since early 2024, the SVC4SIDS project has been collaboratively working with the EAF Nansen Programme on activities in Cabo Verde, focusing on updating the fisheries management plan. This activity is part of a ten-year strategy to enhance the value chains of mackerel scad and tuna-like species, developed by the SVC4SIDS project. This aligns with Cabo Verde's Strategic Plan for Marine Research 2023-2030 and is part of the comprehensive applied research strategy developed by IMAR.
