Democratic Republic of the Congo: Conflict analysis in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces

19/10/2023

Despite its vast natural resources, fertile land and favourable rainfal which constitute a conducive climate for two agricultural cycles for various crops within a year, a large proportion of the populations living in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are food-insecure or in a constant state of vulnerability to the various shocks affecting the regions. This chronic vulnerability is due to multiple factors, including decades of poor governance and political conflicts that have created fragile situations throughout the country: dysfunctional institutions, informal and illicit activities and widespread corruption, badly dilapidated public infrastructure and inadequate public services, and recurrent conflicts and violence.

The main objective of this study is to provide a detailed diagnosis of the context and conflict dynamics which are essential elements for a better understanding of the project leaders and managers. The aim is to assess how to integrate conflict sensitivity into food security and resilience-building interventions. The project entitled "Building the Resilience of Smallholder Farmers", which is the subject of this analysis, was funded by the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) and FAO since 2018. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) joined the project implementation team in 2020.
