Disaster risk management situation analysis in Ethiopia’s agriculture sector

14/06/2021

There is growing evidence of the effects of climate change in Ethiopia – rainfall is becoming less predictable, with late onset, early cessation and poor spatial and temporal distribution; the impacts of El Niño and La Niña are becoming more marked; and while drought intensity varies by year, the country has experienced some degree of drought, flooding and/or pests and diseases almost every year in the last few decades. In an effort to counter these effects, the Government has developed various frameworks and policies to integrate disaster risk management and climate change mitigation and adaptation within its programming.

The analysis was commissioned to better understand the achievements to-date in mainstreaming disaster risk management and the factors affecting its integration within the agriculture sector. As part of this, the analysis has identified possible actions to enhance mainstreaming of disaster risk management at the federal and decentralized levels.
