Knowledge Tank for agriculture sectors’ adaptation to climate change

This NAP-Ag Knowledge Tank:

  • Contains tools, methods, case studies and other knowledge materials on climate change adaptation in the agriculture sectors (crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture).
  • Targets national planners, development actors and decision makers.
  • Supports countries in highlighting key resources for adaptation planning and budgeting, especially in formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAP).

This publication summarizes FAO's Disaster Risk Reduction for Food and Nutrition Security Framework Programme. This framework  is based on four pillars: 1) Enable the environment (Institutional strengthening and governance of risk and crisis in agricultural sectors); 2) Watch to safeguard (Information and early warning systems on food and nutrition security and transboundary threats), 3) Protect and build livelihoods (Protection, prevention, mitigation and building livelihoods with technologies, approaches and practices across all agricultural sectors), 4) Prepare and respond (Preparedness for and response to crises in agriculture, livestock, fisheries and forestry).

This publication highlights the challenges to shift from climate impact studies focusing on crop yields towards a more action-oriented research agenda: the challenge of changing the culture of research; that of deriving stakeholder-driven portfolios of options for farmers, communities and countries; that of ensuring that adaptation actions are relevant to those most vulnerable to climate change; the challenge of combining adaptation and mitigation. Highlights research needs to better initiate adaptation planning with more relevant and focused information and ensure ownership.

This report is part of the Economics of Adaptation to Climate Change (EACC) study, which was initiated by the World Bank in early 2008, funded by the governments of the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Its objectives are to develop an estimate of adaptation costs for developing countries and to help decision-makers in developing countries understand and assess the risks posed by climate change and design better strategies to adapt to climate change. Thee study estimates that the cost between 2010 and 2050 of adapting to an approximately 2 degrees warmer world by 2050 is in the range of $75 billion to $100 billion a year.

This report profiles the available climate change–related datasets and their accessibility and procurement details in the 10 member countries of the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA). It further assesses the incorporation of climate change adaptation strategies in national development plans and discusses each country’s position in the current UNFCCC negotiations. The strategies common to all member countries include the development and promotion of drought-tolerant and early-maturing crop species and exploitation of new and renewable energy sources. Most countries have areas that are classifiable as arid or semiarid, hence the need to develop drought-tolerant and early-maturing crops. It provides essential information to begin adaptation planning within the National Adaptation Plan process especially in agriculture sectors.

This short report presents a summary of current scientific knowledge on the impacts of climate change on farming and food systems, and on the implications for adaptation and mitigation. It calls for a holistic and strategic approach to linking knowledge with action in answering the challenges faced by climate change as well as for a closer collaboration between researchers and decision-makers. It lays the ground for a thorough reflection on where to start in addressing climate change in the agriculture sectors.

A progress report of activities implemented during the first six months of a project to promote gender mainstreaming in the national adaptation policy and practices for agriculture and food security. Discusses literature review and Participatory Action Research (PAR) methods. Example of an approach to understanding relevant gender issues and developing gender-inclusive policy on climate change, agriculture and food security.

This report highlights the significant potential for mitigating climate change in the region through improved management of agricultural land and crop and livestock husbandry practices, as well as on tapping into the traditional knowledge of the local communities. It is based on information on a field assessment of risks associated with climate variability in eastern Kenya and compilations of climate related agricultural risks gathered from a Kamba radio dialogue with local communities of Eastern Kenya.
