Knowledge Tank for agriculture sectors’ adaptation to climate change

This NAP-Ag Knowledge Tank:

  • Contains tools, methods, case studies and other knowledge materials on climate change adaptation in the agriculture sectors (crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture).
  • Targets national planners, development actors and decision makers.
  • Supports countries in highlighting key resources for adaptation planning and budgeting, especially in formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAP).

The CCAFS-Climate data portal provides global and regional future high-resolution climate datasets that serve as a basis for assessing the climate change impacts and adaptation in a variety of fields including biodiversity, agricultural and livestock production, as well as ecosystem services and hydrology. The data in the portal can help researchers making climate change impact assessments, and potentially in the planning phases of the NAP process, particularly for crop modelling and agro-climatology.

International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) : IMPACTLite Tool
The IMPACTLite Tool was designed and implemented for field work. It helps capture the diversity of farming activities and characterize the main agricultural production systems. It is useful to anyone with the ambition to better understand farmers' production systems and their dynamics.

Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) plan provides a guide for operationalizing CSA planning, implementation and monitoring at scale. CSA plan consist of four major components: (1) Situation analysis; (2) Targeting and prioritizing; (3) Program support; and (4) Monitoring, evaluation and learning. Each component contains information, tools, and approaches to enable action, including identifying funding sources.

The CSA Programming and Indicator Tool helps to examine the scope of a given program or intervention through the three dimensional lenses of Climate Smart Agriculture (productivity/income, adaptation and mitigation). This tool strengthens the planning phase of interventions in order to ensure that all potential CSA related outcomes beyond productivity\income pillar, are properly included in the design of the monitoring and evaluation framework. Supported by a database of over 378 indicators with CSA-related indicators gathered from several international development agencies and institutions, such as FAO, DFID, GIZ, IFAD-ASAP, World Bank, USAID and CCAFS, this tool can facilitate the delivery of productivity outcomes, but also tracking adaptation and mitigation impacts.

This brief explains how to take into account the gender gap in agriculture in the development of site-specific Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA)-sensitive practices. It includes information on: how to adopt a gender-responsive approach to CSA, the challenges to adoption of a gender-responsive approach, gender equality in the three pillars of CSA, gender-sensitive indicators of CSA performance, projects that have applied a gender-responsive approach to introducing CSA-sensitive practices.

This working paper presents a participatory methodology that has been designed to provide organizations with the tools to understand the interrelations between climate impacts, food systems and livelihood strategies at the local level, while taking into consideration traditional /indigenous knowledge of the participating community. It applies a multidimensional view of the vulnerability of livelihood strategies to climate change. It provides an initial understanding of the local context and vulnerability profiles, which combined and triangulated with other sources of information (meteorological data, socio-economic indicators etc.) feeds into the process of identifying adaptation measures.

University of Oxford, Environmental Change Institute - ECI: The UKCIP Adaptation Wizard
The Wizard provides a framework and resources to help users generate information to inform their adaptation strategy. It is a 5-step process to help assess organisations'vulnerability to current climate and future climate change, identify options to address organisations' key climate risks, and help develop and implement a climate change adaptation strategy.
