This sourcebook provides step-by-step guidelines to conduct vulnerability assessments and to monitor changes in vulnerability over time. It is is structured along eight modules which provide detailed guidance on the operationalisation of a vulnerability assessment. The approach of the Sourcebook is applicable from national to local level and to a broad range of sectors. It is illustrated with examples and lessons learned from pilot applications in Bolivia, Pakistan, Burundi and Mozambique, with a wide range of reference to water scarcity and management.

This guide aims at addressing the lack of information on how men and women adapt to and mitigate climate change; explaining what tools can be used for participatory research and promoting gender-sensitive adaptation and mitigation activities in agriculture. It is targeted to agricultural development professionals working with households and communities. It contains main concepts for understanding the interrelations between climate change and gender in agriculture and food security; and a field-tested tool box of Participatory Action Research methods for gathering gender-sensitive information, useful for understanding needs and priorities in relation to climate change in agriculture.

The Self-evaluation and Holistic Assessment of climate Resilience of farmers and Pastoralists (SHARP) tool helps farmers and pastoralists self-assess and prioritize resilience aspects of their livelihoods in a participatory manner. The survey is both paper and tablet based and assesses the resilience of farmers and pastoralists to climate change organized into governance, environmental, social, economic and agricultural practices using a combination of self-assessment and academic review of livelihood components. There are 54 questions in total of which 26 are mandatory to fully assess resilience. SHARP can be used both as a monitoring and evaluation tool, as well as a learning method integrated into agropastoral/ farmer field schools training curricula.

Tool for resilience programming, the Resilience Index Measurement and Analysis (RIMA) is a quantitative approach that enables a rigorous analysis of how households cope with shocks and stressors. Comparisons can be made between different types of households (for example, male-headed versus female-headed or urban versus rural) in a given country or area. Resilience analysis using RIMA provides the necessary evidence to more effectively design, deliver, monitor and evaluate assistance to vulnerable populations, based on what they need most, and can support national adaptation planning. RIMA contributes to humanitarian and long-term development initiatives to build food secure and resilient livelihoods. FAO has applied RIMA in more than ten countries in the Near East and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Economics and Policy Innovations for Climate-Smart Agriculture (EPIC) programme works with governments, research centres, universities and other institutional partners to support the transition to Climate Smart Agriculture(CSA) by using sound economic and policy analysis. The ultimate objective of the programme is to support developing and in-transition countries to formulate agricultural investment proposals to increase resilience to climate change and promote CSA. EPIC seeks to bridge the gap between field research, policy making and financial investments in agriculture. EPIC knowledge products and results can help countries engaged in the formulation and implementation of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) in identifying and harmonizing climate-smart agricultural policies, analyzing impacts, effects, costs and benefits as well as incentives and barriers to the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices in the national adaptation plans.

The publication contains descriptions and links to tools related to climate change adaptation. It points users to additional sources of information. The compendium provides users with key information about existing adaptation analysis, decision frameworks and tools, special features of each framework or tool, and information about how to obtain documentation, training, or publications supporting each tool. It has been designed to be used as a reference document to identify available frameworks and tools for assessing vulnerability and adaptation. It is intended for use by either assessment managers or technical researchers; it does not require extensive technical knowledge of modeling or specific decision-making techniques. Related to agriculture sectors, the compendium contains tools e.g. on downscaling techniquest for climate impact and weather variability; for socio-economic scenarios; for decision making; estimating cost for adaptation. It has also specific tools for agriculture and water sectors, terrestrial vegetation and for coastal areas.

This technical paper provides a literature review and analysis of best practices and available tools for the use of indigenous and traditional knowledge and practices for adaptation. It also covers the application of gender-sensitive approaches and tools for understanding and assessing impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change. It includes an extensive list of literature and examples from diverse regions and sectors and different decision contexts.

Cases available form part of the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Toolbox. A case provides information on a particular instance of SFM application. This section includes all the cases available in the SFM Toolbox, they can be in form of publications, videos, audios, websites, etc. The classification of cases helps in finding suitable examples for different forest types and biomes. Filtering allows finding case studies that can help in preparing forestry-related adaptation and climate change mitigation actions.

The AdaptationCommunity.net is a knowledge platform that provides an inventory of methods for adaptation to climate change with examples of practical application in the form of methods briefs and webinars. The list of recommended resources contains case studies and climate impact assessments for example for coffee, rice, maiz and other major crops, as well as coastal areas. The user will find a set of ressources (such as frameworks, guidelines, comparitive analysis, etc.) related to vulnreability assessments, and other methods from tools related to climate change adaptation in English, French and Spanish, mainly from GIZ, UNDP and UNFCCC.

CDKN & Institute for Development Studies: Knowledge Navigator: Guide to online key climate change platforms
Online application which helps the user to find and easily access selected knowledge sharing platforms and networks on climate change and development. The dataset provides knowledge brokers, intermediaries and other practitioners with a clearer picture of who is working in the Climate Change sector, to enable them to link up more effectively. This project was initiated by the Climate Knowledge Brokers Group and developped by IDS Knowledge Services with the support of the Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN). Through the search function, the dataset allows finding partners in agriculture sectors and focusing on different aspects of climate action.
