Knowledge Tank for agriculture sectors’ adaptation to climate change

This NAP-Ag Knowledge Tank:

  • Contains tools, methods, case studies and other knowledge materials on climate change adaptation in the agriculture sectors (crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture).
  • Targets national planners, development actors and decision makers.
  • Supports countries in highlighting key resources for adaptation planning and budgeting, especially in formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAP).

Detailed analysis linking gender roles and gender-based differences in land ownership to men and women's differential views of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices and their willingness to change activities. Also notes gender-based inequalities in access to information. Qualitative and quantitative methods used at field level in this study are relevant methods for identifying gender issues in the scoping and appraisal of adaptation options.

This research report defines the Underground Taming of Floods for Irrigation (UTFI) concept, an approach for co-managing floods and droughts at the river basin scale with a potential to address climate change adaptation and mitigation and disaster risk reduction challenges globally. UTFI involves strategic recharge of aquifers upstream during periods of high flow, thereby preventing local and downstream flooding, and simultaneously providing additional groundwater for irrigation during the dry season for livelihood improvement. Three key stages in moving UTFI from the concept stage to mainstream implementation are discussed.

This report highlights how investments in natural capital present some of the most economically viable and socially inclusive adaptation and resilience strategies in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). It provides a reflection on how to prioritize natural capital when planning for adaptation, making decisions and financing it.

This project report presents an assessment of institutional dimensions of adaptation to climate change in the livestock sector lead through mixed methods approach. The International Livestock Research Inistitute analysed two levels: assessment of overall institutional system operating within a particular landscape and assessment of one or more particular governance mechanisms. This case provides elements to have in mind on insitutional aspects when planning for adaptation in the watershed level.

Analysis of the drivers of adoption of agricultural practices that can decrease the vulnerability of agro-pastoralists to climate change in the Borena zone of the Oromia Region in Ethiopia. This case study provides useful information and ideas when laying the ground for and preparing adaptation interventions, especially in the livestock sector. Results suggest that better local institutions lead to changes in key household-level characteristics, which positively affect adoption of sustainable practices.

This meta-synthesis of national climate change adaptation plans, policies and processes spans twelve countries at various stages of adaptation planning and implementation, in three priority regions for CCAFS: West Africa, East Africa and South Asia. The scope of this review focused primarily on climate adaptation in the agriculture sector, but also included consideration of related sectors, such as water, forests and land use.
