This NAP-Ag Knowledge Tank:

  • Contains tools, methods, case studies and other knowledge materials on climate change adaptation in the agriculture sectors (crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture).
  • Targets national planners, development actors and decision makers.
  • Supports countries in highlighting key resources for adaptation planning and budgeting, especially in formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAP).

This study examines the incentives and constraints to adoption of the promoted climate-smart agricultural practices in Kaptumo, Nandi County of Kenya. It provides useful knowledge on the dynamics of adoption of the Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices and lessons learned  to further inform extension, projects and up-scaling. The results from this study are valid for the population in the MICCA pilot site and may be generalized to similar areas in Nandi County and other counties in the country, which are characterized by tea-maize-dairy farming system and small land sizes. The study considers wider policy, institutional and social structures and processes that may affect adoption. In addition the assessment also provides farmers’ perceptions on initial benefits of those practices in terms of agricultural production, livelihoods diversification, overall resilience to climatic risks and household food security.

National Agriculture and Food Security Investment Plans (NAIPs), prepared by a number of African countries within the AU-NEPAD Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP), provide the opportunity to integrate the up-scaling of practices that potentially benefit development, food security and climate change adaptation and mitigation into an existing continentally and country-owned sustainable agriculture development framework . This paper proposes a methodology to examine the potential of existing NAIPs to generate climate change benefits. A rapid screening methodology is presented and applied to 14 CAADP NAIPs.  This screening methodology would benefit the formulation of national adaptation plans (NAP).

The objective of the study was to identify regional and national gaps and opportunities to reduce the vulnerability of the sector to impacts from climate change and increase the resilience of fisheries and aquaculture livelihoods to disasters. The identification of gaps and opportunities were made through a combination of a survey, website searches and reviews of documents – including policies and strategies – that contain fisheries/aquaculture and climate change adaptation (CCA)/disaster risk management (DRM) aspects. Identified national and regional priorities were compared to actions in place and thus gaps were identified. A total of 23 countries, 16 of which are least developed countries (LDCs), were considered for Western and Central Africa. Overall, 27 gaps or recommendations were identified. These are presented in Chapter 4, with reference to their source and in respect to the four areas of adaptation and disaster risk management action : strengthened governance to address disasters and climate change impacts affecting fisheries and aquaculture; addressing and reducing underlying risks through prevention and adaptation measures; managing effective response and improving preparedness for disasters and climate change; and improved early warning systems and availability of information.

This skills assessment framework clarifies the complex mix of institutional measures needed for adaptation planning to be successful backed by well-tailored and recurrent skills development. The publication is derived from experience acquired during a joint UNDP-UNITAR Global Water Partnership mission carried out in Niger in May 2014, under the National Adaptation Plan Global Support Programme (NAP-GSP). Recognized by the UNFCCD as the primary recommended database for sustainable land management good practices, including measures of adaptation, the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) is a global network of national, regional and international institutions, such as FAO, providing tools and methods that allow sustainable land management specialists to identify fields and needs of action and to share their valuable knowledge in land resources management. The WOCAT knowledge products: 1) a global online database system of three databases on SLM technologies, SLM approaches and SLM mapping, including case studies and maps from over 50 countries; 2)  global, regional, national publications, factsheets, guidelines, inventories of practices; and 3) videos can help in identifying and illustrating how to implement SLM practices as part of adaptation actions in the field and landscape levels.

The tools do not provide a detailed risk analysis, nor do they suggest specific options for increasing the project’s resilience. MOSAICC is a tool for simulation designed to carry out inter-disciplinary climate change impact assessments on agriculture through simulations. It integrates four models: a statistical downscaling portal to downscale Global Circulation Models (GCM) data to weather stations networks, a hydrological model for estimating water resources for irrigation in major basins, two water balance-based crop models to simulate crop yields under climate change scenarios and a Computable General Equilibrium model (CGE) to assess the effect of changing yields on national economies. A data management system and a flexible and configurable system allow the users to upload data and run multiple models. The results from simulations by MOSAICC can be used by experts from national partner institutions but also by a wider audience of policymakers, scientists, students, civil society organizations, to raise awareness of the potential impacts of climate change and the need for adaptation. This simulation tools helps in laying the ground and formulating a Nation Adaptation Plan (NAP).
