Improved Pesticides and Chemicals Management in the Former Soviet Union

Milieukontakt International (MKI)

Milieukontakt international (MKI) is an environmental organisation with a large network of individuals, organisations and institutions working for a better environment throughout the world.

Established in 1988 in The Netherlands with its head office in Amsterdam, MKI works in more than 20 countries in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, South East Europe, Central and Southeast Asia and Africa.

MKI has a strong focus on active stakeholder involvement and capacity building, while at the same time addressing the the need to actually solve concrete environmental problems on the ground. Important themes in recent MKI projects include Integrated water resources management in Russia, sustainable platinum production and use in Africa and Europe, and Green Agenda development plans for local communities in the Balkans, Moldova, Russia and Central Asia.

Between 2005 and 2008, MKI implemented its first pesticides safeguarding and capacity building project - Elimination of acute risks of obsolete pesticides in Moldova, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan (financed by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch foundation DOEN) - in close cooperation with IHPA and technical advisor Tauw Environmental Consultants. This project safeguarded 100 tonnes, 200 tonnes and 90 tonnes respectively of pesticides in Moldova, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan.

MKI has subsequently been involved in different POP pesticides projects in Eastern European, the Caucasus and Central Asian Countries, as well as in Egypt and Vietnam.

Mission

MKI initiates partnerships to improve the quality of life by enhancing people’s participation in the development of ecologically sustainable societies. This strategy can be defined in three phases:

  • building capacities,
  • involving citizens and
  • solving environmental problems.

MKI provides training, coaching, support and advice for organizations working for sustainability. It stimulates and supports the involvement and empowerment of citizens and develops processes of participative strategy development and decision making. And finally, it connects these activities to solutions for environmental problems.

In order to achieve the desired results, MKI builds strategic alliances and partnerships with civil society organisations and other stakeholders active for the environment.
