Improved Pesticides and Chemicals Management in the Former Soviet Union

The International HCH & Pesticides Association (IHPA)

The IHPA was founded in July 1998 with the aim of facilitating and promoting international co-operation and the exchange of experiences within management of pollution problems stemming from the production and use of HCH and other unwanted pesticides worldwide. The IHPA supports work towards sustainable solutions in production and application of pesticides.

Since September 2002, the IHPA has been officially registered as a Foundation in The Netherlands.

Mission

The IHPA promotes international co-operation of all parties involved in the field of pesticides, such as international organisations, public authorities, crop protection organisations, producers, NGO’s, contractors, consultants and those who are concerned.

The IHPA organises the International HCH & Pesticides Forum and publishes the Forum proceedings and thereby makes information available.

The IHPA co-operates with other dedicated organisations, wherever possible to achieve its objectives.

The IHPA in the project

The IHPA is providing support to the current project through the implementation of a regional survey on pesticide waste management capacity. The survey looks to complete an assessment of the national and regional legislative framework for management of hazardous wastes such as obsolete pesticides. The study will focus on completing a baseline survey of current waste management practices compared to the statutory requirements set in the Basel and Stockholm Conventions and other international legal instruments.

Existing legislation and practices will also be compared to international best practice as presented in the relevant EC Directives. The aim is ultimately to identify sustainable options for the establishment of regional and national waste management capacity in the future.
