Improved Pesticides and Chemicals Management in the Former Soviet Union

The FAO GCP (Government Cooperative Programme) agreement was signed with the Republic of Belarus on 11 February 2014, with responsibility for implementation of the project assigned to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The project team in Belarus has set the following priorities:

  • Environmentally sound disposal of all wastes remaining from the recently closed GEF project for pesticide disposal. It is estimated at 310 tonnes of waste will be exported for destruction under the project;
  • Consolidation of all inventory data in order to develop a detailed risk profile for Belarus;
  • A review of national pesticide legislation, pesticide life-cycle and impacts from use of HHP; and
  • The development of a national system for pesticide container management.
  • Development of a national awareness and communications plan linked to the above activities.
