2023 has been a full year for WaPOR!

Our involvement in key events like the UN Water Conference with our side event on the significance of water allocation for sustainable food production as well as participation in other events such as the Africa Climate Week, the World Soil Day, the Nile Basin Development Forum, the World Water Week, the Baghdad International Water Conference, provided platforms to bring more awareness around WaPOR data and the potential that Earth Observations offer for supporting the SDGs

🆕 A pivotal milestone for 2023 was the release of a new version of WaPOR data (version 3.0) and the introduction of a new portal, the culmination of many months of planning and work.

In parallel, the work in the partner countries carried on with 14 trainings and 12 workshops that spanned from project inception workshops to stakeholder co-creation workshops, crucial steps in the collaborative development of tools for the different local needs.

A project-wide meeting took place in Rome, where the entire WaPOR team, that is composed by FAO staff, international consultants, representatives from IWMI, IHE Delft, eLeaf, our donor, and the national coordinators, convened. This gathering allowed the team to reflect together on the achievements and chart a course for the future.

This year was also punctuated by a hackathon that focused on the communication of data for agricultural applications which showcased the creative potential of combining WaPOR data with other datasets. Adding to our array of educational resources, we released a new MOOC on WaPOR data concepts and validation.

🏆Finally, it is worth mentioning that the project landed the FAO a GEO SDG award as a custodian agency for its contribution to the sustainable development goals.
