Steering Committee Meeting of the WaPOR Project in Algeria

The steering committee of the WaPOR project met on June 10, 2024, at the National Institute of Agronomic Research of Algeria. The purpose of the meeting was to review the implementation of activities and gather recommendations for the continuation of the project.

The presentation of the project report highlighted the main events and activities carried out in Algeria, namely:

  • The IWMI expert mission from May 29 to June 1, 2023;
  • The creation of the WaPOR digitization unit at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development;
  • The WaPOR concept and validation training workshop held from November 7 to 8, 2023;
  • The regional training workshop "QGIS for Water Productivity Analysis" from February 26 to 29, 2024;
  • The mapping of crops in the Mitidja plain, season 1.

Following the presentation, discussions raised important points such as the implementation of the project at the university and scientific research levels through the launch of master's and doctoral programs, the organization of a workshop to present the results of crop mapping and the model for determining water needs, and the desire to encourage intersectoral work between the agriculture and water resources sectors.

At the end of the meeting, the chairman of the steering committee thanked the members for their presence and the quality of the discussions, both on the project aspect and the technical aspect, while also thanking the FAO for the good progress of the WaPOR project in Algeria.
