WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

Training on the integration of WaPOR and IMISET

07/12/2023

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), in collaboration with the FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) in Ethiopia, recently introduced the WaPOR tool during 2-day (December 5 to 7) training event at the ILRI campus in Addis Ababa. This is a step in the of an effort carried by the MoA, with the support of IWMI  integrated into the Irrigation Management Information System (IMISET) as part of IWMI's comprehensive suite of tools. The training aimed to equip attendees with the skills needed for effective utilization of WaPOR data, providing step-by-step hands-on guidance on tasks such as calculating seasonal agricultural water use, determining crop water requirements, and assessing irrigation performance indicators. The session was attended by 17 participants from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands, Agricultural Transformation Institute, Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, Ministry of Water and Energy. It was structured into two segments, with the first covering the setup of Python development environments, and the second one focusing on practical applications of the tool's functional components for essential computations. This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing water management and agricultural practices in Ethiopia.
