WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

Training workshop concept and validation WaPOR in Algeria

07/11/2023

As part of the WaPOR 2 project activities in Algeria, a WaPOR concept and validation training workshop was held from 7 to 8 November 2023 at the Algerian National Institute for Agronomic Research in Algiers. The main objective of the workshop was to train managers from the agriculture, water resources and scientific research sectors in the application of validation principles to enable validation analysis of WaPOR data on a national or regional scale.

This workshop was led by trainers from IHE Delft and was structured with theoretical and practical sessions. The coaches and the participants held an enriching discussion about the context of agriculture in Algeria, and specifically in the Mitidja plain.

The first day of training was dedicated to the theoretical aspects, with a review of the WaPOR database and ET WaPOR using ET Look. The second day was purely technical, focusing on the method for validating remote sensing data, with exercises in validating CHIRPS with in-situ data and qualitative validation of WaPOR layers.

The President of the Steering committee closed the workshop, expressing great satisfaction with the results and thanking the FAO and IHE Delft, as well as the commitment of the participants. He also highlighted the dynamic created, which will serve as a basis for future WaPOR project activities in Algeria.
