District and Province level officials meet to map climate risks of farmers’ in the south of Lao PDR

The meeting organized by the Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALAM) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), in collaboration with the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI); and the Department of Meteorologyand Hydrology of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE)

For the first time, the Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALAM) and with the collaboration National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI), within Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) are working to produce maps of the present risk and impact related to climate change in Lao PDR.

 This activity is a collaboration and is co-financed between two main climate change projects. First, the project “Applying seasonal climate forecasting and innovative insurance solutions to climate risk management in the agriculture sector in SE Asia” otherwise known as De-RISK SE Asia. The project, implemented by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) together with International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is financed by the International Climate Initiative of German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (IKI-BMU). Second, the FAO project Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information Systems (SAMIS) that is financed by the Global Environmental Financing (GEF) and implemented by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) and the Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALAM) within Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF).

This initiative, that strictly link the activities of two ministries, is targeting the production of very important data that will be used for decision making especially in the process of national level and local level planning for the agricultural sector.

 his activity is the first of a series of three workshops and include 45 officials from the District and Province Offices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the provinces of Champasack, Salavan, Xekong, Attapeu. More workshops will be organized soon after this one.
