Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information System (SAMIS)

The Director General of FAO visited the Climatology and Agro-meteorology Laboratory at the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology

During an official visit to Lao PDR, the Director General of FAO, Mr Qu Dongy, visited the Climatology and Agro-meteorology Laboratory that is being supported by the SAMIS project. The delegation was welcomed by Ms Outhone PhetLuangsy and by Mr Nikhom Keosavang, both Deputy Director General at the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

First, Mr Dongy observed the weather sensors that the project is installing in the field as they were presented by Mr Viengxai Manivong, National Project Director. Dr Monica Petri, Project Coordinator, gave a short introduction to the project activities. Later, the crop long term modelling under different climate change scenarios were presented by Mr Saysongkham Sayavong of the Department of Agricultural Land Management. In addition, the DG visited the IT and Modelling Office were Mr Khambane Inthipunya, FAO consultant, shown the preparation of the bulletins and database compilation. Finally, Mr Somphan, Head of the Laboratory, introduced the DG to the the Laos Climate Services for Agriculture (LaCSA) system that was presented by Mr Sengduangduan Phouthanoxay, Deputy Director, and my Ms Sengchanh Silatthana, Division Officer. The DG and the FAO delegation expressed appreciation and shared guidance and recommendations to the team.
