Training for using foresight to policy recommendations

When it comes to future climate scenarios and related information on the implications for crops, farmers and experts across Lao PDR have better info than ever before thanks to Land Resources Information Management System (LRIMS).

Sharing this knowledge with technical and policy makers was the purpose of the first of a program of training sessions that Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALAM), Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, has organized from November until December 2020, for a total of 18 hours. Participants included the Department of Planning of Finance, the Department of Policy and Legal Affairs, and National Agricultural and Forestry Research Institute at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Also, Natural Resources and Environment Statistics and Research Institute from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment participated.

The training team was from the University of Utrecht in Netherland and the Research Programme Climate Change and Food Security (CCAFS) of the Global Center for International Agricultural Research (GCIAR).

The training had the objective to help policymakers are increasingly using foresight to imagine and experiment with future climate conditions and amplify the robustness of climate change adaptation planning. In present world, there are multiple uncertainties including climate change. The foreign scenario methodology, that used a vast amount of data produced by the government of Lao PDR, it is an innovative and modern methodology for policy preparation dealing with present and future challenges.
