Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information System (SAMIS)

LRIMS, the first big data system in Lao PDR, is online

18/11/2021

A few years ago, at the beginning of the FAO/GEF project Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information System (SAMIS), the country did not have national-level datasetswith a granularity apt for land evaluation processes. There was a lack of human and technical capacity to conduct sophisticated modelling exercises. Unfortunately, information was often disregarded for decision-making.

On Thursday 18th of November, the Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALAM), will make the Land Resources Information Management System (LRMIS) public. The project process is coordinated by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology. Activities in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry included the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Center, and the Plant Protection Center.

The Land Resources Information Management System (LRIMS)is a web enabled geo-spatial system aimed to support policy options designing and land management planning. The first LRIMS tool was developed in Libya in early 2000, and other countries have taken a similar path to integrate all relevant data in a single platform. LRIMS contains data on agricultural land cover, land use, soil and livelihood of farmers. In addition, it contains climate scenarios and crop scenarios for the present and for the future.

The launch of LRIMS happened in Thursday 18th of November 2021 in Zoom at the presence of more than 300 invitees from government offices, civil societies, and international agencies.

Thanks to LRIMS, evidence based policy will be used to make better decisions, and better plans. Also, LRIMS data will be used to monitor the success of the approved legislations. The private sector will use LRIMS to access agricultural areas that will remain suitable over a long-time, regardless of climate change.
