Introduction of SAMIS to the Government of Nepal
In order to build resilience building and sustain the livelihoods of farmers, the Government of Nepal has identified the Koshi River Basin (KRB) is identified as one of the country's most urgent priorities. This has also been noted in the upcoming Green Climate Fund (GCF) Country Programme.
The proposed project aims to instigate transformational change towards climate-resilient and higher-value agriculture. The project will achieve this goal by ensuring that the change process contributes to the increased resilience and enhanced livelihoods of vulnerable people and communities and improved food security and agro-ecological conditions.
The presentation of SAMIS has been useful because the project will employ a combination of climate-resilient agriculture, value chain, and integrated watershed approaches. The approach in Nepal will include decision-making based on climate services and agro-ecological zones.
The meeting has been chaired by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Government of Nepal, Mr. Prakash Sanjel. From Nepal, participants included the Department of Hidrology and Meteorology, the National Agricultural Environment Research Centre, the Nepal Agriculture Research Council. The participation from Laos included the presenters from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology and the Department of Agricultural Land Management. Finally, the FAO Nepal office, the FAO Laos office, and the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific were present.
