Workshop on Social, Economic, and Human Dimensions in Fishery Management Decision-Making

08/05/2024

Location: FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy

The "Social, Economic, and Other Human Dimensions in Fishery Management Decision-Making" workshop was held at the FAO Headquarters in Rome from May 8 to 10, 2024, and organized by the FAO Equitable Livelihoods Team,  the Assessment and Management Team, and the EAF-Nansen Programme from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division.

The workshop aimed to explore the integration of social and economic dimensions into fishery management and policy decisions. Drawing on previous work related to social and economic aspects of fishery management, participants examined a range of indicators, community well-being measures, and trends. A detailed analysis was conducted on access issues in fisheries, including resources, aquatic space, financing and credit, and markets.

The event brought together institutions, academia, civil society, and government representatives, serving as a platform for discussions and detailed presentations on various social and economic dimensions, such as gender, community employment, and fisher income.

Over three intensive days, participants engaged in knowledge exchange to explore how social and economic dimensions could be utilized at different scales, from household to regional levels.

The event highlighted the importance of incorporating social and economic factors into fishery management to ensure more equitable and effective outcomes for communities dependent on fisheries.
