SADC Regional Management Strategy: Banana Fusarium Wilt

Banana is an important agricultural commodity in Africa and provides food and a livelihood to millions on the continent. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc TR4), a soil-borne fungus that causes Fusarium wilt of banana plants and poses a threat to the production of this food crop in the region. 

To address banana Fusarium wilt TR4 in southern Africa, this strategy document has been developed to address the following:

1. Explain the production and importance of bananas in the region.

2. Summaries the occurrence of Fusarium wilt in southern Africa and discuss the threat that Foc TR4 poses to banana production, food security and livelihoods in the region.

3. Summaries activities that need to be introduced to respond to its detection.

4. Propose a regional contingency plan
