SADC Regional Management Strategy: Fall Armyworm

09/05/2023

Fall armyworm (FAW) is an insect native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Its larval stage feeds on more than 80 plant species, including maize, rice, sorghum, millet, sugar cane, vegetable crops and cotton. FAW can cause significant yield losses in the absence of natural control, good agronomic practices or resistant plant varieties.

Once established in an area, it is almost impossible to eradicate and prevent FAW from spreading. The purpose of the Regional Fall Armyworm Management Strategy 2022–2026 is to strengthen regional cooperation in the management of FAW for improved market access as well as food and nutrition security in the SADC region.
