09/05/2023

Fruit and vegetable production is one of the fastest-growing agriculture sectors in Africa. It offers the most significant opportunities for improved income generation, employment creation and improvement in food and nutrition security.Fruit flies in the family Tephritidae pose an important threat to the production of fruits and vegetables throughout the world. These fruit flies cause s ignificant direct damage to the crops.

The purpose of the Regional Strategy for the Management of Fruit Flies in Southern Africa 2022–2026 is to strengthen regional co-operation in the management of fruit flies of economic importance for improved market access as well as food and nutrition security in the SADC region. The transboundary nature of fruit flies makes it impossiblefor a single land-linked Member State to manage them alone.
