Sustainable and circular bioeconomy for food systems transformation

New FAO bioeconomy flyer now available

News

FAO has just published a new flyer as part of its ongoing drive to spread knowledge on sustainable and circular bioeconomy. The two-page primer, Bioeconomy for sustainable food and agriculture, is an ideal entry point for those looking to brush up on their understanding of bioeconomy, grasp its importance for agrifood systems transformation, and learn about the unique role FAO plays in coordinating bioeconomy work to enhance food and nutrition security worldwide.

FAO Members endorsed bioeconomy for sustainable food and agriculture as a programme priority area (PPA) for the next decade under the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–31. The PPA will have a particular focus on sustainable natural resource management, waste reduction and pollution reduction.

This positioning of bioeconomy at the heart of FAO’s work is already bearing fruit through initiatives such as a circular bioeconomy project in Côte d’Ivoire that uses market waste to rear black soldier fly as feed, and a recently announced USD 3.7 million Global Environment Facility project in Pakistan that will turn waste from banana production into bio-based textiles.
